Another movie from my childhood, Return to Oz is a continuation of the Wizard of Oz story. I loved watching this as a kid, though Jack PumpkinHead was a character that still chills my blood a bit.

The story picks up where the last movie ended. Dorothy has returned to her home and is trying to become used to life back on the farm with her aunt and uncle. But she keeps getting nightmares and constantly thinks about her short time in the land of Oz. Worried about their niece, her aunt and uncle take her to see a brain doctor. The doctor claims that Dorothy is delirious and that a shock to her brain with electricity will cure her (the movie takes place in 1899 when electricity was becoming more widespread, but still largely unused for medical practices, thus many doctors at the time had incorrect ideas about how electricity could aid mental health). Scared of the place she’s in and the doctors that are there, Dorothy runs away during a storm, falling into a flooding river and being swept away in the current.

When she wakes up, shes back in Oz. But the place has changed since the last time she was there. The yellow brick road has been destroyed by something and the Emerald City is in ruins. The ruler of Oz, Scarecrow, as well as the Queen Ozma, are missing. Eventually Dorothy finds her way to the Goblin king, who claims he took her old friends captive as he is the rightful owner of all gems and crystals in Oz. To free her friends from the king’s spell, she must outwit him at a game and find her friends among the many knickknack within the King’s underground castle. After she reunites with her old friend the Scarecrow, she must face the headless witch who has imprisoned Ozma.

Since this movie is directed by Tim Burton, it’s stranger and a bit creepy compared to it’s older, and more famous, predecessor. There’s not much music either as this movie isn’t a musical, like the first Oz movie is. Even so, I really do enjoy this film. If you’ve read the original Oz book series, it’s exciting to see more of the world of Oz and the many different creatures who live there.

If you like fantastical adventures and worlds, I recommend this movie. Just be sure you watch or read the first Oz movie or books! 

私が子供のころの映画に、『オズの魔法使い』の続編、『オズ』があります。ジャック・パンプキンヘッドは少しヒヤッとするキャラクターでしたが私は子供のころこの映画を観るのが好きでした。

前回の映画のストーリをふりかえってみましょう。ドロシーは叔父と叔母の待つ家に帰り農家での暮らしに再び戻ろうとしていました。しかし彼女は何度も悪夢にうなされており、オズの国での少ない時間にいつも考えていました。ドロシーは姪について心配しており、彼女の叔母と叔父は彼女を脳外科に連れていきました。お医者さんはドロシーの意識が混乱しているため脳に電気を送って治療しました。ドロシーは自分がいる場所とお医者さんに恐れており、彼女は嵐の中を逃げ、氾濫している川に落ちてしまい、そして運ばれました。

この映画がティムバートンによって監修された時から、以前よりさらに怪しく不気味になり

有名になりました。この映画はミュージカルのように音楽がたくさん使われておらず初期の

オズの魔法使いの映画に似ています。だけれども、私はこの映画がとても好きです。

もしあなたがオズの魔法使いシリーズの本を読んだら、オズの世界やたくさんの変わった生き物たちにワクワクできると思います。

もしあなたがすばらしい冒険と世界が好きならば、私はあなたにこの映画をお勧めします。
