突然ですがみなさん、毎年6月18日がなんの日かご存知でしょうか？

Do you know what day is June 18th in Japan? If you don't, take a guess!

何を隠そうこの日は、記念すべき「海外移住の日」なのです！

The answer is "Japanese Immigration Day"!

さまざまな理由から近年注目の高まる海外移住ですが、この記念日の歴史は案外長く、その制定は1966年にまで遡ります。本記事では、「海外移住の日」の成り立ちや、その現在についてご紹介します。日々の語学学習の励みとなれば幸いです。

Today, people move abroad for many reasons, and moving to foreign countries is a hot topic. The history of "Japanese Immigration Day" is actually pretty long. In fact, it was established in 1966. In this article, we will introduce the origin of "Japanese Immigration Day" and how it's celebrated today. We hope that this article will help you with your English learning.

1908年6月18日、ある一隻の船がブラジル、サントス港に到着しました。その船の名前は笠戸丸(かさとまる)と言い、第一回目のブラジルの移民船です。およそ50日間の航海を終えた781名の移民が地球の裏側、ブラジルの大地に一歩を踏み出しました。

日本人の多くは、ブラジルに広がるコーヒー農場に派遣されたものの、その年の年末には約半数の移民が大工や料理人など、別の仕事に転職していたようです。

On June 18th, 1908, a ship arrived at the Port of Santos. The ship's name was "Kasatomaru" and it was the first Japanese immigrant ship to Brazil. After about 50 days of voyage, 781 immigrants landed in Brazil, a country located on the opposite side of the globe from their home.

At first, many of them were sent to coffee plantations. However, at the end of the year, about half of them changed jobs and worked as carpenters, cooks, and so on.

その後ブラジルの日系人コミュニティは、日本企業の一員となる働き手だけでなく、同国の政治的リーダーをも数多く輩出してきました。目覚ましい活躍ですが、その背景には日系人自身の努力だけでなく、海外にルーツを持つ人々に寛容なブラジル社会の風土があったことは言うまでもありません。

As time progressed, Japanese Brazilians not only became important members of companies run by the local Japanese immigrant community, but some also became political leaders of Brazil. Their success was thanks to their own effort and also the tolerant Brazilian society in which they became a part of.

そして現在、ブラジルなど日系人の住む国々との友好関係を発展させるため、6月18日の前後にはさまざまなイベントが行われています。食べ物や音楽など異なる文化に触れてみることで、世界の広がりと言語学習の意義を再確認してみてはいかがでしょうか。

Today, many events are held around June 18th each year to strengthen the relationship between descendants of Japanese immigrants worldwide, including in Brazil. We recommend that you try food, music, and other things from different cultures to help feel the importance of learning a new language.
